What it does

An infusion of chamomile tea is an extremely effective remedy for nervousness and even hysteria, because it has a powerful yet harmless soothing and sedative effect. A tincture is used to cure diarrhoea in children and is mixed with purgatives to prevent griping. As a tonic it helps gropsy. Externally, it can be applied alone or with other herbs as a poultice to relieve pain, swelling, inflammation and neuralgia. Its strong antiseptic properties make it invaluable for reducing facial swelling due to abscess or injury. As a lotion, the flowers are good for relieving toothache and earache. The use of chamomile dates back to ancient Egypt, when the plant was dedicated to the sun because of its extensive healing properties.
